The face behind Painting by Angel
It's great that you're here. I'd like to briefly introduce myself.
Let me introduce myself
Angel van Elst
Angel is my nickname. I was born and raised in Hapert, Brabant, a small village in the Kempen region where I have happily lived my entire life. I have lived with my partner since I was 21, and together we have two wonderful sons, aged 21 and 24.
I would be happy to tell you how I evolved from being a mother first and foremost to becoming an independent entrepreneur.
My way
From florist to artist
-
From a young age
Always creative
For as long as I can remember, everything in my life revolved around creativity. As a little girl, my bedroom was a kind of shop window that had to be styled differently every month, and arts and crafts was my favorite subject in primary school.
-
Ten years
Florist through and through
I chose to study fashion and clothing, then became a florist, and worked happily in a flower shop for ten years. Later, I ended up in a sports store, but I noticed that I couldn't express my creativity. In my free time, I painted more and more often.
-
The turning point
A burnout that changed everything
Then, out of nowhere, a severe burnout struck. I was at home for eight months, and by painting daily, I found that it gave me an enormous sense of happiness and helped me get back on my feet. By overcoming that burnout, I felt more powerful than ever, and I knew one thing for sure: things had to change.
-
2015
The course was changed
I started working less and painting more. I started a Facebook page, came up with a name, and posted photos of my work.
-
After one week
Three shopkeepers called
After one week online, I received requests from three retailers asking if I wanted to supply them. Looking back, that was the beginning of Painting by Angel.
-
My style
Natural colors and petrified textures
My paintings are characterized by natural color tones and petrified textures. I love it when art looks lived-in, as if it has already traveled and the novelty has worn off. My work fits into various interior styles: rugged and minimalist country, wabi-sabi, industrial, bohemian, shabby chic, vintage, japandi, and hotel chic.
-
Now
I only make what I find beautiful myself.
A blank canvas and an open mind—that is what it all started with, and that is what I want to hold onto. I do not accept commissions, because the freedom to create what I want is worth everything to me. Each of my paintings is unique and affordable; that is important to me.
Finally
From hobby to profession
Customers from far and wide take the trouble to stop by, and I am grateful for that. Turning my hobby into my profession feels like an immense wealth.
